Laos defeated IR Iran 2-0 to improve their chances of qualifying for the 2019 AFC U-16 Women’s Championship while Vietnam were beaten by Australia by a solitary goal.

The results meant that both Vietnam and Laos are tied on three points in Group A of the second round of the qualifiers while Australia, who have won both of their games so far, are on top with six points.

Group A standings after two matches

Hosts Laos, who had lost to the Vietnam girls in their first match, registered the win at the New Laos National Stadium in Vientiane thanks to goals from Phimpha Thongsavang and Chaikham.

Meanwhile, Australia needed a late goal from Jordan Jasnos to defeat Vietnam in the other match and in doing so, assure qualification for the continental championship to be held in Thailand this September.

Vietnam will now face Iran while Australia take on Laos on the final match day of the tournament on March 7, Thursday.

Vietnam will have to match the result of Laos in the other match to guarantee progression while the hosts Laos will have to beat Australia and hope the results go their way in the other match to progress. Top two teams from the group will qualify for the tournament proper.
