The Vulture lauds Ballon d’Or winner

Cristiano Ronaldo

Real Madrid legend Emilio Butragueno has said that along with Alfredo Di Stefano, Cristiano Ronaldo "is the most important player in Real Madrid history."

The 32-year-old Los Blancos attacker picked up his fifth Ballon d'Or at a glamorous ceremony at the Eiffel Tower on Thursday evening, beating rivals  Lionel Messi to equal his five awards.

Butragueno, who has a rich history with Real, scoring nearly 100 goals and winning numerous awards during a very successful period for the club, acknowledged the impact Ronaldo has had on the club.

At the event, Butragueno said: "It's very difficult to win a Ballon D'Or. I know what I'm talking about [having never won it]. So to win it five times is just amazing.

"We have to congratulate him and enjoy with him. There is no doubt that alongside Alfredo Di Stefano, he is the most important player in Real Madrid history."

Butragueno added: "His motivation standards are endless. So that explains everything for a player that already won everything.

"He is a big professional that works out hard and has a great ambition. I wish we can keep enjoying with him for many more years."

Despite continuing to break record in Europe this season, Ronaldo has struggled in La Liga, but Butragueno said people shouldn't be so quick to criticise the Portugal star.

"People always expect Real Madrid to win and play well. But at the end of the day they are just sport-men.

"Cristiano sometimes cannot score but we always must be aware about how impressive player he is and how many things he gave us."
