Friday’s La Liga wrap

In Friday’s opening to the Primera Division season, Leganes saw off Deportivo Alaves after a controversial Gabriel Pires goal, while Valencia beat Las Palmas 1-0..

In the early kick-off, Alaves were left to rue some missed chances and poor fortune when they missed a first half penalty through Manu Garcia. It cost the visitors dearly as Pires would pop up to score the decisive strike in the 24th minute.

Despite being clearly offside in the build up to the winner, play was allowed to continue and the 23-year-old midfielder struck the ball into the back of the net past a stranded Fernando Pacheco in goal.

Alaves nearly grabbed an equaliser in the final 10 minutes, but Burgui’s powerful strike went just over the crossbar with keeper Pichu Cuellar stranded between the sticks for the home team.

In the second match of the day, Valencia completed a routine victory over Las Palmas on home soil at the Mestalla. Simone Zaza proved to be the hero as he netted the 22nd minute winner.
