The Philippines U23 team got the 2017 SEA Games campaign off to a winning start against rivals Cambodia on Tuesday.
Two second half strikes were enough for the Philippines to defeat Cambodia 2-0 despite the latter’s early dominance.
Cambodia defeated the Philippines in the qualifiers and after a strong start at the Selayang Stadium, it looked like the this fixture could be headed the same way.
But the Philippines were able to weather the first half storm. That gave them confidence tolay more expansive in the second half and it paid off, with Reymart Cubon rising unchallenged in the danger area to head home a corner from Javier Augustine’s boot in the 51st minute.
The Philippine faithful were sent into raptures when they doubled their lead in the 82nd minute. Kou Ichi would fire the ball home from a superb free kick from 23 yards out to seal the win.
The match ended in more disappointment for Cambodia, as substitute Choum Pisa was shown a straight red card in the dying embers of the game after striking Daniel Berman in a goalmouth scramble.
Sok Samnang’s penalty effort would hit the woodwork, but the damage had already been done for the victorious Philippines.
