Players to watch:

Manchester United’s £75m signing from Everton, Romelu Lukaku will be eager to get himself on the score-sheet as soon as possible – and against a new-look West Ham side, may well be looking to cause some damage. The Hammers have been unconvincing in pre-season and could be easy fodder for the hungry marksman, who netted in United’s Super Cup loss to Real Madrid.

West Ham made some strong off-season signings, not least in former Man Utd striker Javier Hernandez for £16m from Bayer Leverkusen, who will be gunning for a goal against his former team.

Team form and manager quotes:

The Red Devils come into their league opener on the back of a demoralising defeat to Real, after wins over Valerenga and Sampdoria in pre-season friendlies.

While they also lost 1-0 to Barcelona, Mourinho’s side won their five previous season warm-up ties.

The Hammers last lost 3-0 to Manchester City after two high-scoring draws with Werder Bremen and Altona 93. Their pre-season was a mixed bag, with players seemingly still settling into coach Slaven Bilic’s preferred style of play.

Speaking ahead of this tie, Mourinho focused his ambitions on going all the way this season.

He said: “What does it mean for me to be the Premier League champion? I think it’s the objective of every one of the top teams and every one of the top teams’ managers. I would say I’m really happy to start the Premier League this weekend, because our pre-season was very complete, and I think we are ready.”

Bilic told his club’s official website: “It’s not ideal to play there in the first game of the season, but on the other hand it’s brilliant!. It’s always the greatest away game in the league and of course we are positive and of course we have a chance.

“We know they are Manchester United and they improved the squad with quality and big transfers and all that and they already played one competitive game against Real Madrid.

“It’s going to be very difficult and we know we will need to be on top of our game. We are missing some players who it would be better if we had with us, but of course we are positive.”

Team news:

Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo and Ashley Young are unavailable for Mourinho while Eric Bailly and Phil Jones are available again after completing their suspensions.

Michail Antonio, Manuel Lanzini, Cheikhou Kouyate, Andy Carroll and Diafra Sakho are all injured for West Ham.
