Safiq: Title win a bit of a let down

Safiq Rahim said that clinching the Malaysia Super League (MSL) title was a bit of a let down or Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) after they clinched the title despite losing 2-1 at Selangor on Saturday.

Kedah’s 2-1 loss to Pahang meant JDT won a fourth consecutive MSL title with three matches of the season left, but Safiq it was tough to celebrate.

“We are disappointed to have lost. It kind of disrupts the feeling of celebration,” club captain Safiq told ESPN FC.

“But despite losing, we are deserved champions over the course of the season. Everyone played a big part in this victory and they deserved to be congratulated.”

JDT had taken the lead in the first half thanks to Natxo Insa’s stunning long-range arrow, but Selangor managed to turn the game around in the second period thanks to goals from Amri Yahyah’s strike from a narrow angle before Andik Vermansyah won it with another long range strike.

Despite losing, JDT’s 11 point lead over Kedah meant they were crowned champions again.

Safiq put the team’s latest title victory down to a great team ethic.

“Others still give us a fight, but I think what separates us is our focus and consistency. Our teamwork is also great, and we take all the positives and negatives in stride,” Safiq said.

Meanwhile, coach Ulisses Morais said the players has done it for the fans.

“This victory could not have been achieved without so many people supporting us. I am very happy to have delivered this title, especially to the fans whom have been great,” he said.

He said the champion’s attention would now turn toward the Malaysia Cup.

“We will work towards winning the Malaysia Cup after this, as we have never won before,” he added.
