With Neymar’s move to Paris Saint-Germain seemingly a done deal, the Brazilian’s soon-to-be ex-Barcelona team-mate Lionel Messi has wished him well for the future.
On Wednesday, Messi posting a video on Instagram featuring images of himself and Neymar during their time together at Barca.
The Argentine wrote: “It was an enormous pleasure to have shared all these years with you friend @neymarjr.
“I wish you good luck in this new stage of your life.”
Messi and Neymar have been together at Barcelona since the latter joined the Spanish giants in 2013. Along with Luis Suarez, they formed one of the most formidable forward lines in world football.
But that partnership looks set to come to an end as sources report that Neymar has agreed a five-year deal with PSG, and that the transfer will be finalised over the next two days.
Some reports suggest the total value of the deal is worth a staggering €500m, after wages, bonuses and a €222m buyout clause (to be paid out in its entirety) are taken into account.
Neymar is reportedly tired of living in Messi’s shadow and wants to carve out his own identity in world football.
“People will say this has been driven by money, but he wants to become the leader at the club,” a source in Spain close to Neymar said.
“He wants to be independent, and wants to win the Ballon d’Or. He believes he can do that in Paris.”
