FC Bayern München slumped to yet another pre-season friendly defeat on Wednesday, going down 2-0 to Napoli in the third-place playoff match for the Audi Cup.
Carlo Ancelotti’s men have now lost five of their last six friendlies against top-class European position, with Arsenal, AC Milan, Inter, Liverpool and now Napoli all coming out on top against them.
While pre-season results are not generally seen as indicative of what is to come, there must surely be some concern in the Bayern camp after a whole string of lackluster performances – several of them coming in their own backyard.
Bayern made 11 changes from the side that lost 3-0 to Liverpool on Tuesday night, but it made no difference as they once again came off second best at the Allianz Arena.
Despite bossing possession in the early stages, Bayern soon found themselves a goal down in the 14th minute when Kalidou Koulibaly converted from close range after Nikola Maksimovic had forced the save from teenage goalkeeper Christian Fruchtl.
Ten minutes after the break, Napoli had their second. Dries Mertens managed to pick out Emanuele Giaccherini after a smart run, and the Italy international powered home a low shot from 12 yards out.
Outside of a shot from Renato Sanchez towards the end of the first half and a free kick from 30 yards out by Arkadiusz Milik with eight minutes left, there was precious little for the Napoli keeper to do.
Both teams made several changes in the second half but it had little effect on the result, as Napoli held on to end their Audi Cup campaign on a victorious note.
