Reds defence ‘needs work’ – Klopp

Despite his side recording a 2-1 comeback win over Leicester City on Saturday, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was upfront about where improvement is needed.

Liverpool may have beaten the 2015/16 Premier League champions to lift the Premier League Asia Trophy, but that does not mean they are adequately prepared for the forthcoming season, says Klopp.

Goals from new signing Mohamed Salah and Philippe Coutinho were enough to see off the Foxes, who opened the scoring on 12 minutes via a goal that the Reds boss feels should have been avoided.

Jürgen Klopp credited Liverpool for showing 'a lot of things are already there' as they beat Leicester City 2-1 to win the Premier League Asia Trophy in Hong Kong. "It’s a real pre-season, really hard games in the most difficult circumstances against very, very good opponents. Winning both games is a big thing – we don’t have to make it smaller than it is. We saw that not everything was working as we wanted it but a lot of things are already there. People who were here for the week know how hard it was here for a football team. Playing these two games was really good. I’m completely fine, I’m pleased about the performance. The boys did well; yes, we conceded a goal. I said before the game the line-up is my idea, so it was clear that not everything in defence will really work because these boys together have a big offensive potential but obviously need to learn how to defend together. So we conceded the goal and then we scored two wonderful goals. A few boys did a wonderful job to go a little bit longer than 45 minutes. That was an important part. You could see after the changes, we tried a little bit too wild to go for the third goal and gave a few opportunities away for Leicester, counter-attacks. It’s something we really have to learn – that in these moments, yes, we want to create more chances but no risky passes from the last line to midfield and lose the ball there and they get a chance. The last 30 minutes was more mature and I’m fine." #LFC #YNWA #Klopp #JurgenKlopp #Livepool #LiverpoolFC #WeAreLiverpool #LFCFamily #LFCNews #Anfield #TheReds #PremierLeague #PreSeason #PLAsiaTrophy #LFCTour

"Two games, two wins so that's, of course, the best thing," Klopp told Sky Sports. "You can see it was difficult again and it was not 100 per cent of our physical ability.

"Players like Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy, they cause you problems so we're a little bit too late in the mind because the legs are tired," he continued.

"I thought we could have defended the first goal seven times already, but in the end, it is a cross and a free header so it's not nice but it's what happens," he said of Islam Slimani's opener.

"We came back and even before the good goal, we were already the dominant side and playing good football so it was all OK."

Asked whether he is concerned over the defensive issues which resulted in the goal, Klopp gave an unambiguous response.

"I liked everything I saw but that [defensive work] is something we need to fix 100 per cent. I know it is pre-season and we can change it but it is something I don't like already so we need to work on it."
