Shane Long is relishing the opportunity to show new Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino his worth in pre-season as the striker aims for a starting berth.
The Republic of Ireland international made 45 appearances for the Saints last term, scoring five goals and assisting in four, although a metatarsal fracture ended his season early.
Long is eager to start the new campaign strongly after being forced to miss the final two months of 2016/17.
"For me, last season was a bit disappointing," the 30-year-old told the club's official website.
"I didn't play as much as I would have liked to and felt I didn't get the chances that I deserved at times, so I want to hit the ground running this year.
"It's the first pre-season in a long time that I've been here from the start, so I want to show the manager what I have got and leave an impression on him come the start of the season."
