Ligue 1 side Nantes have announced the departure of head coach Sergio Conceicao as he prepares to join Primeira Liga side Porto.

The 42-year-old former Braga and Vitoria Guimaraes boss, joins the Portuguese runners-up after guiding his French team to a seventh-place finish this season.

He had only been at the club for a short time and came close to securing Europa League football, having taken over when the club were struggling in 19th place.

Nantes president Waldemar Kita said in a statement: "Sergio Conceicao made the directors of Nantes aware of his irreversible wish to join FC Porto.

"In order to properly prepare the 2017-18 season in the best conditions, Nantes had no choice but to accept.

"I tried to give him all the means to continue the adventure here. I wish him good luck."

Conceicao, who began his coaching career in an assistant's role at Standard Liège, has also managed Olhanense and Académica.

He played for Porto from 1996-98 and again in 2004.

Kita concluded: "Now we are looking for a new coach and there is no shortage of proposals, proof that FC Nantes is attractive."
