FIFA U-20 World Cup Wrap: Germany out, England advance

England U 20 World Cup

Germany’s adventure in the 2017 U20 World Cup came to an end at the round of 16 after they lost 4-3 in extra time to Zambia.

The first match of the day saw Saudi Arabia knocked out of the competition as they went down 1-0 to Uruguay.

The knockout tie was settled by a single goal from Nicolas De La Cruz in the 50th minute when he beat Ameen Bokhari from the penalty spot, with the Green Falcons unable to find a reply in the remainder of the second half as La Celeste advanced to the quarter-finals.

Elsewhere, England continued their unbeaten run in the tournament with a 2-1 win over Costa Rica at the Jeonju World Cup Stadium.

A brace from Ademola Lookman (35′, 63′) handed the Three Lions a place in the last eight, although Randal Leal halved the deficit in the 89th minute to make Paul Simpson’s side sweat in the dying embers of the match.

Meanwhile, Zambia and Germany produced a thriller at the Jeju World Cup Stadium, where the Junior Chipolopolo emerged 4-3 victors after extra time.

The West Africans had to come from behind to book their spot in the quarter-finals, after Philipp Ochs gave Guido Streichsbier’s youngsters a 37th-minute lead.

But Emmanuel Banda (50′) restored parity early in the second half before Fashion Sakala (68′) fired the Zambians in front and Enock Mwepu (86′) doubled their advantage late on.

The Germans, though, stuck twice in the final two minutes through Suat Serdar (89′) and Jonas Arweiler (90′) to force extra time, where Shemmy Mayembe (107′) scored the winner.

Tuesday’s results:

Uruguay U20 1-0 Saudi Arabia U20

England U20 – 2-1 Costa Rica U20
