Antonio Valencia is thrilled to have been rewarded with a one-year extension to his Manchester United stay.

The Ecuador international was excellent for the Red Devils this season as he played in 28 Premier League games this term and 43 in all competitions, while also captaining the side in their Europa League final victory against Ajax.

He has an option to extend for a further year.

Speaking after signing his new deal, the former El Nacional and Villarreal player, who joined the side from Wigan Athletic in 2009, revealed his delight.

He told the club's official website: "I am absolutely delighted to have signed a new contract.

"Manchester United has been my life since 2009. I would like to thank the manager for the confidence he has given me this season and I am sure that we will be challenging on all fronts next season."

United boss Jose Mourinho added: "It is no secret that I had been an admirer of Antonio’s long before I joined the club.

"I knew what a fantastic player he was and he has not disappointed me on that front. However, what I could never have imagined was what a great person he is.

"I know I have said this before but I truly believe it is a real privilege for us to have such a good player and such a good man. I am delighted he has extended his contract."

Valencia has won two Premier League titles, one FA Cup, two League Cups, the UEFA Europa League and three Community Shields with the club.
