Shanghai SIPG edge Jiangsu Suning at home

Shanghai SIPG earned a 2-1 win over Jiangsu Suning in the first leg of their AFC Champions League Round of 16 clash on Wednesday.

The all-Chinese affair saw hosts Shanghai come back from a goal down to win, maintaining their perfect record at home for the tournament.

Brazilian import Hulk again played a key role, scoring from the penalty spot and setting up the goal that would give Shanghai the lead.

Roger Martinez got the visitors off to a dream start in just the ninth minute after some poor defending from Shanghai. The Colombian found himself in space and was superb with his finish.

But unfortunately, that was all Jiangsu had to write home about.

The 31st minute saw Hulk make a strong run into the danger area before he was brought down by defender Li Ang and the referee pointed to the penalty spot. The Brazilian made no mistake in converting, scoring his fifth goal of the campaign.

After drawing an excellent save from Jiangsu stopper Zhang Sipeng seven minutes later, Hulk was in the action again in the dying embers of the opening half, setting up a crucial goal for the Red Eagles.

He delivered the crucial pass that found Odil Akhmedov, who drilled the ball home from close range to give Shanghai the lead at the break.

The second half yielded few clear-cut opportunities for either side as defence became the aim of the game for the hosts. Shanghai came close to making it 3-1 in the 48th minute, with Hulk’s powerful left foot almost finding the target.

The second leg kicks off on 31 May at the Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre.
