Ernesto Valverde could be poised to take over at Barcelona after Athletic Bilbao announced that their head coach is set to relinquish the reins at San Mames.
The former Barca and Los Leones forward has been heavily linked with a return to the Camp Nou as Luis Enrique's replacement, after 'Lucho' announced in March he would be stepping down at the end of the campaign.
Valverde was appointed to the helm at the Basque club in 2013 after a short spell with La Liga rivals Valencia, and he has enjoyed a successful tenure in the north of Spain.
Athletic only narrowly missed out on Europa League football after finishing in seventh place this term, having qualified for Europe in each of the previous three seasons under the guidance of the 53-year-old Spaniard.
A press conference is scheduled for Wednesday when Valverde will present alongside club president Josu Urrutia.
"Ernesto Valverde will not continue as coach of the Athletic Club first team in the 2017-18 campaign," Los Leones said in a brief statement on Tuesday.
