Tuesday night saw Lekhwiya SC and Al Ahli both put four goals past their opponents in the final round of the group stage in the AFC Champions League.
Lekhwiya SC eased past a hapless Al Fateh, netting four goal in the first half to win 4-1 and secure the top spot of Group B and advance to the Round of 16.
Mohammed Musa opened Lekhwiya’s account in the ninth minute and Youssef Msakni doubled the lead in the 20th minute. Ali Hassan Afif and Chico Flores added the extras before half-time. An 87th minute own goal from Flores was the only luck Al Fateh would have.
In other Group B action, Esteghlal Khuzestan would earn a late draw against Al Jazira, which sees them edge Al Fateh for the final playoff spot in the group.
An 86th minute goal from Mehdi Zobeidi cancelled out Humaid Ahmed’s first half strike to earn a point.
Kaveh Rezaei scored his fourth goal of the campaign in Esteghlal’s 2-1 win over Al Tawoon in Group A. It was arguably his most important, as the 76th minute goal saw the Iranian club secure their knockout phase berth.
Finally, Al Ahli join Esteghlal in the Round of 16 with an impressive 4-0 hammering of Lokomotiv Tashkent.
Two goals late in the second half sealed Lokomotiv’s fate, with Asamoah Gyan and Everton Ribeiro scoring within five minutes of each other.
