Sampdoria missed out on the chance to go level with Torino after their clash at Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino ended in a 1-1 draw on Saturday.
The visitors opened the scoring early on in Turin and held onto their lead until the 78th minute when Sinisa Mihajlovic's side equalised to earn a share of the spoils.
Toro remain ninth in the Serie A standings, three points clear of ninth-placed La Samp with four matches remaining in the season.
Marco Giampaolo's men were looking to snap a three-match winless streak and they got off to a positive start when Patrik Schick broke the deadlock in the 12th minute.
Karol Linetty advanced on goal before laying the ball off for Schick, who fired past Joe Hart from outside the area.
Bruno Fernandes threatened to double La Samp's lead 10 minutes later after being picked out inside the box by Fabio Quagliarella, but Hart managed to block the Portuguese midfielder's shot with his legs.
The hosts had their chances in the first half, with Adem Ljajic particularly wasteful in the final third as they went into the half-time break one goal down.
The second half got off to a frenetic start as both teams had opportunities, Hart required to keep out Quagliarella and Dennis Praet in the opening seven minutes, while Christian Puggioni denied Lucas Boye at the other end moments later.
Toro continued to push for an equaliser and Andrea Belotti forced a fine save out of Puggioni with his strike from inside the area on 70 minutes, before Iturbe went close with a long-range effort that flew just past the right post soon afterwards.
Their efforts were finally rewarded 12 minutes from time when Iturbe capitalised on a hashed clearance from Vasco Regini to slot past Puggioni into the bottom-right corner of the net.
