Stoke City started brightly and came close to scoring in the eighth minute when wonderful interplay between Marc Muniesa and Marko Arnautovic saw the ball played across to Saido Berahino, who saw his well struck effort blocked by defender Winston Reid.
With both teams having very little to play for in the Premiership, the action was quiet in the first half although Jonathan Calleri may have done better in the 26th minute when he blasted over from Edimilson Fernandes' pass.
Andre Ayew then saw his brilliant bicycle kick turned away by Jack Butland in the 33rd minute after a great cross from left wing-back Arthur Masuaku found the Ghana international in the box.
Calleri had a chance before the break to give the away side the lead but his audacious Rabona shot was blocked by Bruno Martins Indi just inside the area.
After the interval, Glen Johnson found space for a cross and it broke to Joe Allen, who half-volleyed just wide.
Both sides then had half chances but it was Xherdan Shaqiri who nearly grabbed the opening goal of the game when he saw his strike turned away from the top corner in the 55th minute by Adrian.
United's keeper was back in action moments later when he turned away Berahino's goal-bound strike from the bottom corner. The action went up the other end where Butland produced a fine double save. He first did well to get both hands behind Ayew's strike before denying Manuel Lanzini's header with his feet.
Arnautovic then missed a glorious chance in the 73rd minute when James Collins gave the ball away to Shaqiri, and his superb cross found the Austrian in the small box with just the keeper to beat. However, Adrian turned away the forward's volley from point blank range before scrambling the ball away for a corner.
