Burgstaller revels in Leverkusen win

FC Schalke 04 forward Guido Burgstaller feels if midfielder Leon Goretzka and the rest of the team can maintain their current form, the Bundesliga side can look towards a promising future.

In a season marred by inconsistency, the Royal Blues picked up a sensational 4-1 victory over Bayer 04 Leverkusen at the BayArena on Friday evening.

A Burgstaller brace, along with solitary strikes from Alessandro Schöpf and Benedikt Höwedes set the tone for the visitors before Stefan Kiessling scored a second-half consolation.

The result see's Markus Weinzierl move into eighth place, three points behind SC Freiburg in the final Europa League qualification spot.

"We knew that Leverkusen would put us under pressure from the start," Burgstaller told the club's website. "Luckily for us, we have Ralle [Fährmann] in goal and he made an important save just a few seconds in to stop us from going behind.

"Then we got ourselves ahead and really started flying from there. I am very pleased about both goals. As a team, we took our chances well and were ice-cold in front of goal.

"Leon [Goretzka] was very strong today, especially in his dribbling. If we can replicate this level of performance in the last three games, we can really start to look above us," the Austria international added.

"However, we have to make sure that we bring this level of performance."
