Title race still alive after Bayern drop more points

FC Bayern München have opened up the Bundesliga title race again by succumbing to a 2-2 draw with Mainz at the Allianz Arena on Saturday.

Die Roten produced a sluggish display against their domestic rivals with a UEFA Champions League exit to Real Madrid in mid-week clearly playing on the fatigued player’s minds.

On-loan Stoke City forward Bojan gave the visitors a third minute lead when he pounced on a poor clearance.

But that goal was quickly cut out by veteran forward Arjen Robben after some great work from Frank Ribery set the Dutch man up.

Mainz weren’t done yet, however, and defender Daniel Brosinski restored Martin Schmidt’s side lead five minutes before the break by beating goalkeeper Sven Ulreich from the spot.

The relegation threatened side started with a more compact display in the second-half in hope of nullifying Bayern’s attacking threat and it nearly paid off. But Thiago Alcantara managed to find an equaliser twenty minutes before time, with goalscorer Robben this time playing the provider.

A draw now sees Carlo Ancelotti’s lead at the summit of the league cut down to just six points, with four games remaining, while Die Nullfünfer remain one point of the relegation play-off spots.
