Maziya claim impressive away win at Mohun Bagan

Maldives outfit Maziya United continued to impress in the AFC Cup as they secured a gritty 1-0 victory over Mohun Bagan in Kolkota on Wednesday.

The defeat leaves the Indian side third spot in the group behind leaders Bengaluru FC and Maziya, who elevate themselves to second place. All the teams have played three matches so far.

Mohamed Umair’s 34th minute strike proved to be the difference between the two sides on the night, as the hosts could not find a way back into the match after going behind.

With an eye towards Saturday’s potential I-League title decider against Aizawl FC, Mohun Bagan rested several of their first choice players, and paid the price.

Nevertheless, they still had their chances. Balwant Singh looked to have broken the deadlock on 14 minutes, but his effort from 23 yards out skimmed the crossbar after Pavel Matiash got some fingers to it.

Aleksander Rakic had a chance at the other end six minutes later, but his shot from inside the box flew over.

Mohun Bagan’s defence was exposed in the 34th minute, however, as Ali Samooh was blocked by Souvik Chakraborti as he came swooping in, allowing Mohamed Umair to collect the loose ball, beat Kinshuk Debnath for pace and find the back of the net.

The hosts had several chances to equalise in the second half, most notably to Rakic, who twice found himself in one-on-one situations, but he could not convert.

Maziya were reduced to 10 men with five minutes to play after a second booking for Milos Kovacevic, but they were still able to hold on for the win.
