AFC Cup West Zone wrap: Al Muharraq and Al Wehdat advance

Al Muharraq of Bahrain took over at the top of Group C after beating Saham 1-0 in Monday’s AFC Cup clash in Riffa.

Group C: Al Muharraq 1-0 Saham

Muharraq returned to the top of their group after handing Oman’s Saham a 1-0 defeat, with just one round of fixtures remaining.

The game’s only goal was scored eight minutes before the break by Doris Fuakuputu, capping a dominant performance for the home side.

Robert Jaspert’s side now have 10 points from five games, leaving them one point clear of Al Wehdat.

The result effectively ended Saham and Nejmeh’s hopes of qualifying for the knockout stage.

Group C: Nejmeh 1-1 Al Wehdat

Nejmeh of Lebanon needed a victory to stay alive in the competition but were held to a 1-1 draw by Al Wehdat of Jordan at Saida Municipal Stadium on Monday.

The hosts sealed their own fate in the 84th minute when Hassan Wasswa inadvertently put the ball in his own net.

Nejmeh somehow found an equaliser four minutes later when Al Husein scored with a superb curling strike from just outside the area, but there was no time left for the second goal they so desperately needed.

The result means Al Muharraq and Al Wehdat are both through to the next round. The two teams will fight it out for top spot when they meet on May 1.
