Sunday’s Eredivisie round-up

Feyenoord and Ajax both won on Sunday to keep the Eredivisie title race a tightly contested affair with just one point separating the two sides.

League leaders Feyenoord overcame an in-form Utrecht side 2-0 with goals from Jens Toornstra in the 48th minute and Eljero Elia with 80 minutes on the clock.

Feyenoord ended the weekend on 76 points from 31 games, with Utrecht, who had been on a four-match winning run, in fourth place with 53 points, and Ajax second on 75 points.

The second-placed side had thrashed Heerenveen 5-1 in the day's late game, but only after conceding an eighth minute opener to Reza Ghoochannejhad.

Nick Viergever (24) leveled for his side ahead of a 32nd minute goal from Matthijs de Ligt. Davy Klaassen then got in on the act on 42 minutes, while Kasper Dolberg was on target from the penalty spot 68 as David Neres rounded off the scoring with seven minutes to play.

Heerenveen remained on 40 points in eighth place on the standings.

Groningen, meanwhile, beat PEC Zwolle by the same 5-1 scoreline where Brian Linssen (14, 38) and Mimoun Mahi (19, 53) both netted a brace, with Ajdin Hrustic (88) also on target, as Nicolai Brock-Madsen (46) netted the only goal for the hosts.

Groningen moved onto 36 points in 10th spot, with Zwolle down to 13th with 32 points.

And Francisco Sol (72) and Jari Schuurman (82) both scored as Willem II condemned Go Ahead Eagles to a 2-0 defeat to leave them rooted to the foot of the table on 23 points, seven points from safety, and Willem II in 11th with 36 points.
