Alkmaar hold off Heracles in Almelo

Alkmaar Krul

AZ Alkmaar strengthened their grip on a UEFA Europa League playoff berth when they defeated Heracles 2-1 in Friday’s Eredivisie clash at Polman Stadion.

There was no score in the first half despite both sides having chances although Wout Weghorst would later put the visitors ahead in the 53rd minute after good work by Joris van Overeem.

Alireza Jahanbakhsh then made it 2-0 in the 82nd minute from Weghorst's assist. It appeared the score would remain 2-0 in the closing stages although Brandley Kuwas found the back of the net in injury time.

There would be more alarms for the side from Alkmaar as the Cheeseheads held on for the win that moved them into sixth place on the Eredivisie standings.
