Real Sociedad pushed Sporting Gijon closer to relegation while boosting their own European hopes with a 3-1 victory at Anoeta on Monday.
First-half goals from Willian Jose and Juanmi put La Real in command before Yuri Berchiche sealed the win on 77 minutes, with Uwa Echiejile managing a late reply for the Rojiblancos.
Eusebio's side halted a four-match winless streak to move up to sixth place, while the Asturians remain five points adrift of safety in 18th position following back-to-back defeats.
The hosts got off to a flying start when Xabi Prieto collected a weak clearance on the right and delivered a cross towards the far post where an unmarked Jose headed home after just three minutes.
Sociedad were cruising after Juanmi displayed fine skill to bring down Xabi Prieto's ball over the top and cut inside before firing past Ivan Cuellar at his near post from 12 yards out on 27 minutes.
Rubi's team provided little threat in attack during the opening half and they struggled to carve out many opportunities after the break as well.
The Basque outfit continued to probe and their efforts were rewarded in the 77th minute when a breakaway saw Berchiche latch onto David Zurutuza's pass on the overlap and smash a shot into the roof of the net from a tight angle on the left.
Sporting had the ball in the back of the net on 87 minutes with Echiejile diverting Carlos Carmona's strike past Geronimo Rulli, although the Nigerian was in an offside position and the goal was disallowed.
However, the visiting fans would celebrate a legitimate goal moments later as Echiejile curled the ball home from inside the area to deny the hosts a clean sheet.
