Ingolstadt win, Leverkusen draw

FC Ingolstadt 04 took a big stride in their bid to survive relegation when they defeated 1. FSV Mainz 04 2-1 in their Bundesliga encounter at the Audi-Sportpark on Sunday.

The hosts came out guns blazing and almost took the lead as early as the third minute, but Roger’s header was stopped on the line by goalkeeper Jonas Lossl.

They were rewarded for their continuous attacking efforts in the 10th minute when Romain Bregerie rose highest to head home Markus Suttner’s corner.

Mainz posed little threat to Ingolstadt’s first-half dominance, although they started the second half on a brighter note and almost equalised through Levin Oztunali, who directed the ball straight at the goalkeeper.

Mainz continued to carve out openings, but were let down by poor finishing by Danny Latza and Jhon Cordoba.

The visitors were level when a well-struck free-kick deflected off Marvin Matip into the net, but their joy was short-lived as Florent Hadergjonaj restored Ingolstadt’s lead in the 73rd minute from a tight angle.

Ingolstadt remain second-from-bottom in the table, seven points adrift of 16th-placed FC Augsburg, while Mainz move to 15th place.

Mario Gomez’s seven-minute hat-trick condemned Leverkusen to a 3-3 draw against Wolfsburg in their Bundesliga encounter at the BayArena.

The visitors got off to a bright start and almost took the lead in the eight minute, but Joshua Guilavogui’s header sailed narrowly over the crossbar.

Leverkusen failed to get into their stride and looked more likely to concede than score as Wolfsburg inched closer to the opener with efforts in quick succession from Riechedly Bazoer and Yunus Malli.

Vieirinha should’ve given his team the lead in the 22nd minute after being unselfishly teed up by Jakub Blaszczykowski, but his effort went wide of the target.

Karim Bellarabi had the first real opportunity of the game for the home side in the 34th minute but his low well-struck shot was saved by Koen Casteels.

Bellarabi gave Leverkusen the lead in the 40th minute when he got onto the end of Charles Aranguiz’s cross and made no mistake from inside the area.

The visitors got off to a better start in the second half and came agonisingly close to levelling the score through a Gomez header which went inches wide.

Kevin Volland doubled Leverkusen’s lead in the 65th minute when he reacted quickest to Kai Havertz’s free-kick and finished from inside the box.

Gomez reduced the deficit when he rose highest to head home Blaszczykowski’s delivery. The goal lifted Wolfsburg and they were duly rewarded for their efforts when Gomez grabbed his brace after connecting with Maximilian Arnold’s cross in the 83rd minute.

Things went from bad to worse for the home side when Benjamin Henrichs was adjudged to have brought down Blaszczykowski in the area. Gomez stepped up to slot home the resultant penalty to complete his hat-trick.

Havertz netted the equaliser in the 89th minute after being teed up by Karim Bellarabi. The result sees Leverkusen remain in 12th spot in the table, whilst Wolfsburg move into 14th.
