It’s the first time we’ve seen Bastian Schweinsteiger confused when talking about football!
It’s a running joke in some parts of the world that when it comes to football, Americans really don’t have a clue.
But with the advent of the MLS and several appearances at world cups we hoped that would change – apparently not!
German legend Bastian Schweinsteiger witnessed this wilful lack of knowledge first hand on Wednesday during a press conference to introduce him to fans and the media following his high-profile move to MLS when a reporter asked him this confusing question.
“With your addition to this team is it a fair expectation to see a clear pathway towards a World Cup, competition come out of Chicago?”
Soccer in the U.S. was set back 25yrs when a reporter asked Bastian Schweinsteiger if he could lead the MLS Chicago Fire to a World Cup

Yes, that’s right – THE WORLD CUP.
Credit to Bastian and Chicago Fire officials, they handled what was probably the most ridiculous question ever with the utmost diplomacy, even after the clueless reporter rephrased the question to mean exactly the same thing!
A huddle ensued during which Schweiny opined that perhaps the confused hack was talking about the World Club Cup, before a Fire official suggested he answer about the MLS Cup.
Either way, you gotta give Bastian top marks for his answer.
“I think in football anything is realistic,” he said. “Even if it is against the best team in the world, everything is possible. I wanna win the next match, and then see where we are.”
What a winner!
