Cristiano Ronaldo was enjoying another stellar night on Tuesday in a career that seems to be one never-ending string of successes, but it turned out Sweden hadn’t read the script.
The serial-trophy-winning Real Madrid star was on top of the world having given his beloved Portugal the lead with his 71st international goal in a friendly being held in front of adoring fans on his home island of Madeira.
With his mom and girlfriend among the 10,000-strong crowd watching in the stadium, the European Championship trophy on display and the island’s Funchal airport set to be named after Ronaldo on Wednesday, the evening took on a carnival atmosphere, especially when an own goal from Andreas Granqvist put Portugal 2-0 up before half-time.

Ronaldo was still smiling even after Viktor Claesson pulled one back for the Swedes on 57 minutes, going off to a standing ovation on the hour. But as so often in the 32-year old’s career, things seemed to pivot around him.
Claesson prodded home at the near post on 76 minutes to equalise before Sweden really rained on the parade with an injury-time winner thanks to an own goal from Cavaco Cancelo.
The stadium fell silent. How dare those pesky Abba-loving IKEA freaks spoil Cristiano’s night?

Nevermind, there’s always the medals, the trophies, the mansions, the hotel chain, the underwear line, the countless hot women, and the hundreds of millions of dollars in his back pocket to keep a man happy!
Life’s not all that bad, is it?
