Afghanistan came from behind to secure a 1-1 draw against Vietnam in their 2019 Asian Cup qualifier on Tuesday.
Nguyen Van Toan would open the scoring for the Golden Stars in the 64th minute, but Hassan Amin levelled matters just minutes later and the Asian teams played out to a draw at the Pamir Stadium in Dushanbe.
It was a cagey opening half with few clear cut chances as both teams seemed content of keeping possession.
The excitement finally went up a notch with the first goal. Afghan stopper Ovays Azizi pulled out a spectacular save to deny a free-kick from the edge of the penalty area, but Vietnam’s Van Toan followed up smartly to head the ball home.
The Lions Khurasan would not have to wait long for the equaliser, as Amin fried an unstoppable shot from just outside the area into the back of the net in the 70th minute.
The match is the first result in Group C of the third round of qualifying, with Jordan and Cambodia playing later on Tuesday.
