Hummels slams ‘arrogant’ Germany

FC Bayern Munchen defender Mats Hummels criticised Germany’s performance against Azerbaijan for being too arrogant, despite the team winning 4-1 on Sunday.

Germany cruised to victory in their fifth consecutive World Cup qualifier thanks to a brace from Andre Schurrle, and goals from Thomas Muller and Mario Gomez.

However, Hummels was left unimpressed by the team’s performance and wanted to see a more professional approach to the game.

“We were rather arrogant today, which isn’t nice, and we made life harder for ourselves than it should have been,” Hummels told broadcaster RTL.

Germany manager Joachim Low echoed Hummels’ view, adding: “I am satisfied, but there was some negligence. All that glitters is not gold. The game we delivered wasn’t up to our standards.”
