Figo: I wanted Real to sign Gerrard

Luis Figo wanted Real Madrid to sign Steven Gerrard during the pair’s playing days.

Gerrard shone in a charity match between the ‘Liverpool Legends’ and their Madrid counterparts on Saturday after the former Reds captain score one and set up two in a 4-3 win for the hosts at Anfield.

The former Liverpool captain retired last November, but at the height of his career, he was coveted by clubs from across the world.

And Figo – a stalwart of the Galactico era at Madrid – says he would have loved to play alongside Gerrard in midfield at the Bernabeu.

"The moment in life when we had the possibility to play together, that wasn't possible,” said Figo after the match in aid of the Liverpool Foundation.

"I think it is a pity because everyone wants to play with the best.

"I think Gerrard showed in his career he was one of the best footballers in his position. It was a pity but for Liverpool it was lucky because he could show his quality and talent here, at Anfield."
