Hecking hails Gladbach character

VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach head coach Dieter Hecking has praised his side's strength of will after narrowly losing against Bundesliga leaders FC Bayern München.

Thomas Muller produced the winning strike in the 63rd minute to secure a 1-0 victory for Die Roten at Borussia-Park.

Hecking was impressed with the way his players competed with the strongest team in Germany, and is optimistic about the rest of the season.

"The fact that we were still going even in the closing stages against Bayern didn't surprise me because I know the team very well now," he told the club's official website.

"This team has incredible character. We'll be relying on that over the next few weeks as we have in previous weeks, but the team is still alive.

"We haven't had the rub of the green, for example, to get a point in Hamburg, to get past FC Schalke 04 in Europe and to get the equaliser against Bayern.

"We have to get on with it though and I'm fairly sure that we can reach our maximum level again after the international break."
