It was Muangthong who got off to the brightest start at the Supachalasai National Stadium in Bangkok. After Theerathon Bunmathan saw his shot blocked in the fourth minute, it would be United who hit the front when the same player sent a free kick into the top left hand corner to leave Kwoun Sun-tae in goal stranded in the 12th minute.
Three minutes later Chanathip Songkrasin nearly doubled his side's lead but he saw his shot well saved by Sun-tae down to his left. Antlers then managed their first real attempt on goal moments later when Leandro saw his attempt saved by Kawin Thamsatchanan.
Both outfits would exchange chances with Xisco and Chanathip Songkrasin seeing efforts blocked away from danger. United's Lee Ho then tested Sun-tae with a header in the 25th minute from the lively Bunmathan's cross, but the keeper made a smart save.
Just before the break, Shuhei Akasaki came close to finding an equaliser but his strike was well saved by Thamsatchanan. However, after the interval the leveller came when Pedro Junior slotted home from close range after Leandro's accurate cross in the 47th minute.
In the second period, Antlers seemed to gain momentum and Leo Silva fired an effort that went just over the bar not long after. Pedro Junior would also have two efforts turned away in the 61st and 63rd minute respectively. The Japanese side were applying pressure and would it would eventually pay dividends when Adison Promrak committed a foul in the box, and a penalty was awarded.
Yet, Yuma Suzuki put his penalty wide to the left as United escaped in the 84th minute. Nonetheless, the miss would not prove costly in the final reckoning as Xisco popped up to score deep into injury time with a strike into the bottom corner.
