Feyenoord win over PSV sets Dutch TV record

Feyenoord’s 2-1 victory over rivals PSV on Sunday attracted the highest viewership rating on television in the Netherlands, with an average of 826,000 people tuning in.

Fox Sports recorded the audience average which is a new record for a single TV station. The previous record was an average of 820,000 for Ajax's game against PSV before the winter break.

Sunday's match was eagerly anticipated as it would have a significant bearing in the domestic title race. Jens Toornstra gave Feyenoord the lead before Jeroen Zoet equalised. A Gaston Pereiro own-goal handed the points to Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side.

De Stadionclub appear to be favourites to win the title as they currently enjoy a five-point lead over Ajax with 10 matches to go in the Dutch top flight.

The club's official website confirmed the record-breaking audience numbers in a statement which read: "The match between Feyenoord and PSV has drawn a record number of viewers.

"An average watched on Sunday of 826,000 people. Never before have so many watched the TV station to see a major league game."
