VfL Wolfsburg have axed manager Valerian Ismael after the team were beaten 2-1 at home against SV Werder Bremen.
The defeat was Wolfsburg's fifth in six games and sees them only two points clear of the relegation zone.
"We didn't make the decision based primarily on the latest result against Bremen, but above all on the impressions and results of the last weeks and months," Wolfsburg sporting director Olaf Rebbe said in a club statement.
Ismael took over at Wolfsburg on October 17 and managed only five wins in 15 games, with nine defeats.
"The results aren't just," Ismael told the press after the defeat to Bremen. "It was the best I've seen from us. I didn't feel any uncertainty. Just the result didn't fit the picture."
A new Wolfsburg manager could be appointed as early as Monday.
