The hosts got off to a flying start when Zaza opened the scoring in the fourth minute, the Italian collecting the ball with his back to goal before firing into the top corner on the turn.

Real barely had time to recover when they went further behind five minutes later. Los Che broke upfield and Nani released Orellana, who slotted past Keylor Navas from inside the area.

Ronaldo looked to respond for the visitors, but he failed to test Diego Alves with a shot that fizzed wide before his low ball found James Rodriguez at the back post, but Munir was well-placed to block the Colombian's effort.

However, the Portuguese forward, who was making his 700th appearance in senior football, pulled one back in the 44th minute when he headed home a good cross from Marcelo.

Ronaldo was then denied the equaliser moments later as Eliaquim Mangala deflected his strike from 25 yards out wide of the target.

Gareth Bale was introduced in the second half to provide more impetus in attack, but he failed to make the desired impact, along with Ronaldo, as Valencia were happy to adopt a counter-attacking approach.

Both players had chances in stoppage time as Bale saw his header cleared by Enzo Perez before Ronaldo missed the target from close range, although he had strayed offside.
