Saturday’s Eredivisie round-up: PSV keep up the chase

Defending champions PSV kept their Eredivisie title hopes alive with a 3-1 victory over NEC at the Philips Stadion on Saturday.

The two teams went into the break at level pegging after Ali Messaoud (30') cancelled out Marco van Ginkel's 20th-minute penalty for the hosts.

However, Phillip Cocu's side went on to secure a sixth straight win in the league courtesy of second-half goals from Bart Ramselaar (55') and Luuk de Jong (90').

Meanwhile, Twente strengthened their chances of European football by beating Heerenveen 1-0 at De Grolsch Veste.

A 54th-minute penalty from Mateusz Klich settled matters in Enschede as the Tukkers moved up to sixth place on 34 points, one ahead of De Superfriezen in eighth.

Elsewhere, Heracles climbed into the top-half of the table following their 4-0 demolition of league strugglers Excelsior at the Polman Stadion.

The 16th-placed Kralingers held out until the 42nd minute when Brandley Kuwas gave John Stegeman's men the lead, before second-half goals from Thomas Bruns (58'), Mike te Wierik (66') and Kristoffer Peterson (84') wrapped up a comprehensive win for the Heraclieden, who occupy ninth spot on 28 points.

Utrecht are on track to qualify for the Europa League after running out 3-1 victors against PEC Zwolle at Stadion Galgenwaard.

Bram van Polen's 44th-minute penalty handed the hosts a slender lead at the break, although Gyrano Kerk (49') quickly doubled their advantage in the second half before Nacer Barazite added a third 10 minutes from time, with Nicolai Brock-Madsen (86') grabbing a late consolation for the visitors.
