Thursday Europa League round up

There were big wins for Lyon and Roma in the first leg of the Europa League round of 32 on Thursday night, while 10-man Ajax were held to a draw by Legia Warsaw.

Despite an evenly-poised match, Lyon were deadly in front of goal at AFAS Stadion against AZ Alkmaar. Goals from Lucas Tousart (26), Alexandre Lacazette (45, 57) and Jordan Ferri (90+5) made Alireza Jahanbakhsh's 68th minute penalty nothing more than a consolation in a 4-1 win.

Elsewhere, an Edin Dzeko hat-trick (65, 79, 86) followed Emerson's 32nd minute opener as Roma thrashed Villarreal 4-0 at Estadio de la Ceramica.

Athletic Bilbao got the better of APOEL at Estadio San Mamés, but the scoreline did not do them justice at 3-2.

The visitors had just three shots on target all match and grabbed the lead in the 36th minute through Georgios Efrem, who then scored an own goal to level matters less than 120 seconds later.

Aritz Aduriz (61) and Inaki Williams (72) put Bilbao in a commanding position at 3-1, but the Cypriot side gave themselves every chance of causing an upset in the return leg when Giannis Gianniotas pulled another goal back in the 89th minute.

Ajax would have hoped to have done better, but found the going very tough against Legia Warsaw at Stadion Wojska Polskiego.

The away side boasted 62 per cent of the possession, but ended the match with very little to show for it besides 15 disappointing shots on goal.

To make matters worse, they will be without Kenny Tete for the return leg after he picked up a second yellow card in the 84th minute to earn an early shower and an automatic one-game ban.
