Just when Arsene Wenger thought it couldn’t get any worse, Arsenal sank to one of their worst ever defeats on Wednesday in the first leg of their Champions League after being thrashed 5-1 by Bayern Munich in Germany.
Arjen Robben put Bayern ahead before Alexis Sanchez equalised at the third attempt after his penalty was saved. But it all went downhill from there as Thiago Alcantara struck twice, before Robert Lewandowski and substitute Thomas Mueller added to Arsenal’s woes.
The miserable showing from the Gunners predictably led to an explosion of comment on Twitter, with fans and pundits lining up to have their say and #wengerout trending.
Former Arsenal legend Ian Wright summed things up with a short and concise tweet.
We are a ******g shambles ?

Others chose to focus on the apparent defensive naivete of allowing Arjen Robben to cut inside on his left foot.
A bold strategy from Coquelin to usher Robben across the box and onto his left foot.

Arjen Robben has now scored 124 goals in 238 games for Bayern Munich.

There are remote populations, cut off from the outside world, who have a word for what Arjen Robben always does when in possession

In fairness to Arsenal, no one could have possibly seen that coming from Arjen Robben

5-1. An absolute disgrace…but exactly what I predicted. #WengerOut

5-1. #afc thrashed. Wenger humiliated. When will Kroenke and the board stop sleepwalking, wake up and see the problem? No leadership.
