Real Madrid will take a massive advantage into their Champions League last 16 second-leg tie after defeating Napoli 3-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday evening.
- Real Madrid 3 Napoli 1
- Insigne on target on eight minutes
- Benzema equalises 10 minutes later
- Kroos adds a second on 49 minutes
- Casemiro stuns Azzurri with volley
Lucas Insigne opened the scoring with a fine early finish before Karim Benzema levelled with a close-range header.
Toni Kroos then gave Zinedine Zidane's side the lead for the first time in the match shortly after the break ahead of a stunning strike from Casemiro.
Los Blancos started on the front foot with Benzema forcing a good save from Pepe Reina after a superb run forward from Cristiano Ronaldo, who cut the ball back to the Frenchman from the left.
Marcelo fired wide after being set up by Ronaldo after six minutes, but Napoli took the lead two minutes later with a long-range shot from Insigne that caught Keilor Navas off guard after Marek Hamsic played him in on goal with a fine through-ball.
Benzema then failed to get any real contact to his header from a neat Ronaldo cross from the left as James Rodriguez headed over moments later.
Buoyed by their goal, the Naples outfit looked good in possession as they searched for a second, but Real were level on 18 minutes when Benzema headed home from close range as he connected well to a cross with the outside of his right boot from the right from Daniel Carvajal.
Kroos almost found Rodriguez with a ball over the top of the Napoli defence but Reina was quickly out to claim the ball. Ronaldo then really should have scored in the 28th minute after being fed through in the box by Luca Modric, but he fired well over the target.
Ramos failed to get his header on target from a Rodriguez free-kick from the right, before Reina effected the save as the striker had a second chance to swing a ball into the box.
A Modric shot was deflected wide following a good spell of pressure from Real, while Hamsic shot wide of Navas' left-hand post at the other end after being set up by Insigne.
Modric had a shot blocked by Kalidou Koulibaly, and with the half drawing to a close, Benzema shot onto the right-hand post after being superbly fed through from the right by Ronaldo.
The last chance of the first half though saw Marcelo fire into the side-netting after Raphael Verane failed to get any real connection to a good Kroos corner from the right.
Real made good on an early second-half chance to take the lead for the first time on 49 minutes as Kroos found the bottom-right corner of the net from a pin-point Ronaldo cutback from the right flank.
With their confidence up, Casemiro scored out of nothing on 54 minutes, as his powerful volley from the right-hand side flew into the top-left corner of the net.
Faouzi Ghoulam fired a 62nd-minute free-kick wide as Dries Mertens missed an absolute sitter from close range following a neat cutback from Callejon from the right.
Navas made a smart stop to deny Mertens from the edge of the small box as Insigne fired over after a loss of possession from Modric.
Soon after, Reina got down well to stop Rodriguez from extending Real's lead after he was set through by Kroos to the left, while Mertens saw his 79th-minute shot deflected into the arms of Navas.
Callejon had the ball in the back of the net on 81 minutes from close range, but his effort was chalked off correctly for offside as he connected to an Insigne header from the wrong side of the Real defence.
Modric then fired over from an 83rd-minute corner from the right as Marcelo got caught in two minds as he looked to play in late substitute Alvaro Morata instead of hitting the target after being set up on the left by Ronaldo, for the last real chance of this fascinating encounter.
