Mata hails United ‘step forward’ against Watford

Manchester United playmaker Juan Mata was happy with his club's 2-0 win over Watford, but insists they must keep improving.

The Spaniard was expecting another frustrating evening at Old Trafford until he broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute, with Anthony Martial adding a second on the hour mark.

"It was a convincing performance and we are very happy today," Mata said after the match. "When you play good football and get the three points it is a step forward but we need to keep going.

"It started to feel like it was one of those games again. Their keeper saved every chance but then the goal came and after that it was more comfortable for us. We are going in the right direction."

United remain unbeaten in the last 16 Premier League matches, 11 behind leaders Chelsea and a point below Manchester City in fourth, who still have a game in hand.

"It is very, very difficult, first of all, to get into the top four," Mata added. “We have been winning games but not going higher in the table. We want to go higher and higher. We never know where we will finish."
