Marko Arnautovic forced the first save of the match in the ninth minute when he latched onto a header from target-man Peter Crouch and got an effort away with his left foot, but it was too close to Wayne Hennessey.

The 17th minute saw James McArthur send a header off target after his lovely one-two with Andros Townsend set the winger away down the left, and the Scot then peeled into the box to receive the Englishman’s cross.

The Potters came closest to breaking the deadline not long before the break when Bruno Martins Indi rose to meet a corner and powered a header at goal that had Hennessey beaten, but Townsend was on the line to clear.

The early minutes of the second half saw Townsend cut inside between defenders to draw a foul (and yellow card) from Shawcross and earn a free kick on the left side of the box. He took it himself and played it short and square for Jason Puncheon to have a low blast. It bobbles around and almost falls to Benteke, but Stoke were eventually able to clear.

The breakthrough came in the 67th minute when Marko Arnautovic picked out the run of Ramadan Sobhi with a lofted ball forward. The Egypt international held it up well and laid it off for Joe Allen to fire into the bottom corner.

The result leaves Palace deep in the relegation zone, while Stoke are floating around in the middle of the standings.
