Liverpool and Cameroon centre-back Joel Matip has been subjected to a social media bombardment after his country won Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations title after he chose to represent his club over country prior to the event.
A day before Cameroon won the AFCON, beating Egypt 2-1 for their fifth overall title, Liverpool were beaten 2-0 at Anfield by struggling Hull City which virtually ended the Reds' chances of claiming the English Premier League title for the first time since they last won it in the 1989/90 season.

And since Cameroon has been playing in the AFCON which started on 14 January 2017, Liverpool has only won one out of seven games in league and cup football.
The 26-year-old Matip's decision not to represent his country has caused some hilarious responses via Twitter.

Joel Matip missed out on winning AFCON with Cameroon so he could lose to Swansea, Southampton, Wolves & Hull with Liverpool.

Joel Matip sacrificed playing in AFCON final to enjoy the pleasure of getting beaten by Hull. Respect.
