Sunday’s La Liga wrap

Sevilla missed the chance to move back into second place in La Liga after a 0-0 draw with Villarreal.

Jorge Sampaoli's side had the opportunity to close the gap on leaders Real Madrid, to one point but failed to break down a stubborn Yellow Submarine defence.

Barcelona retained second place, thanks to their draw on Saturday, and the visitors remained in sixth place.

Real Sociedad remain in fifth place after edging Osasuna 3-2 in a five goal thriller at the Estadio Municipal de Anoeta.

The visitors took the lead against the run of play mid-way through the first-half, when Sociedad youth product Kenan Kodro scored against his former side.

Petar Vasiljevic's men kept the slender lead till the break but the floodgates opened after the hour mark when the home side profited from a dominant spell of play.

Centre-back Raul Navas found the equaliser, before Carlos Vela and Juanmi scored in quick succession to take the game away from Los Rojillos.

Sergio Leon did manage to find a second for the relegation favorites to give themselves a glimmer of hope but Txuriurdin held on to the win – leaving the visitors eight points from safety.

Sporting Gijon's poor form continued as their run without a win now stretches to seven games after a 4-2 defeat at the hands of 12th placed Deportivo Alaves at the Estadio Municipal El Molinón.

Playmaker Rubén Sobrino opened the scoring for Alaves in the tenth minute and the visitors kept the lead till half-time.

Venezuelan striker Christian Santos doubled the lead just before the hour mark, before Edgar Mendez' 70th minute penalty made it 3-0.

The Rojiblancos pulled one back through towering Ivorian forward Lacina Traore but defender Alexis restored the three goal advantage immediately for El Glorioso.

And in the 90th minute, second-half substitute Carlos Castro scored the final goal of the game making it 4-2.
