Atletico Madrid unsurprisingly dominated the opening exchanges and Saul would go close to opening the scoring for the home side in the eighth minute but his strike went inches wide.
Diego Simeone's men thought they would take the lead through Antoine Griezmann when the side won a penalty in the 15th minute, but he saw his kick saved by Iago Herrerin – although Fernando Torres reacted sharply and converted the rebound.
Madrid remained in control although they were struggling to create clear openings while Leganes were happy to hit back on rare counters. The strategy nearly worked in the 38th minute when Victor Diaz Miguel broke forward from right-back and fired a shot that whistled across the goal and wide.
However, the home side made the game comfortable when Torres grabbed his brace in the 51st minute. After latching on to Angel Correa's through ball, he surged down the middle and finished with confidence past the keeper. Madrid were in little danger from Leganes and Correa nearly made it 3-0 in the 76th minute.
Moments later Torres had an opportunity to get his hat trick but his fierce effort from the edge of the box was blocked wide for a corner. Darwin Machis did have half a chance to score in the closing stages but he was hesitant in the box and the defence were able to clear.
