Bayern predictably started well at home and would soon take the lead when good work from Arjen Robben saw Arturo Vidal set up Robert Lewandowski to score in the ninth minute.

However, Schalke were back in the contest four minutes later when Naldo hammered a free kick past Manuel Neuer.

The visitors were dangerous on the break and Sead Kolasinac had a chance to score in the 19th minute but his shot was tipped over by Neuer.

The home team then tested Ralf Fahrmann in the 25th minute when Juan Bernat showed good skill to beat his man before striking his shot off the legs of the keeper. The Royal Blues were giving Bayern problems and nearly did go ahead but Guido Burgstaller was unlucky to see his effort from Nabil Bentaleb’s pass hit the bar in the 41st minute.

Moments later Leon Goretzka found himself one on one with Neuer but he was tackled before he could get his shot away. Just before the break, Lewandowski then rattled the woodwork when his strike from Robben’s pass rebounded clear.

After the interval, clear chances were few and far between and it took until the 83th minute for an opening to materialise when Douglas Costa’s fizzing cross was narrowly missed by Lewandowski.

Moments later David Alaba sent in a good cross but Javi Martinez was unable to hit the target.

Schalke’s defending was heroic at times with Matija Nastasic denying Thomas Muller with a world class tackle when it looked as if he might score. Kingsley Coman had a chance to win it for the Bavarians in the last move of the game but he hesitated at the far post from Lewandowski’s flick on, and Schalke were able to clear.
