Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi scored as Barcelona survived a fightback from Atletico Madrid to secure a first-leg lead in their Copa del Rey semi-final on Wednesday with a 2-1 victory.
Suarez and Messi hit the net in the first half as Barcelona dominated the early part of the game, only for Atletico to put in a strong second-half performance and pull a goal back thanks to Antoine Griezmann.
Atleti were unlucky not to level the scores as several other chances went begging.
With Atletico 10 points behind the leaders in La Liga, Diego Simeone’s side know that the Copa del Rey represents their best chance of a trophy this season.
In a hostile atmosphere at the Vicente Calderon, Barcelona took the lead in just the seventh minute thanks to an incredible goal from Suarez.
Picking the ball up on the halfway line, Suarez ran at the defence and poked the ball between the centre halves before clipping it past Miguel Moya.

Lionel Messi then doubled Barca's lead on 33 minutes, hitting a thumping, rising drive from just outside the penalty area that cannoned in off the post to give Moya no chance.
Atleti came out after the break a changed side and pulled a goal back on 59 minutes, Griezmann heading in after Godin nodded a free kick across the area.
Both sides had further chances to score, Griezmann denied by Jasper Cillessen before he and Torres missed late opportunities to level things up ahead of next week’s second leg at the Nou Camp.
