Napoli oust Fiorentina in Copa Italia

Napoli advanced to the semi-final of the Copa Italia after a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Fiorentina at the Stadio San Paolo on Tuesday.

After a goalless first-half the home side looked out-of-sorts despite boasting front-line of Lorenzo Insigne and Jose Callejon.

La Viola were looking to frustrate the hosts and break them down on the counter but Maurizio Sarri's men remained resolute throughout before Callejon eventually opened the scoring in the 74th minute courtesy of a wonderful through ball from Marek Hamsik.

Following his 10th goal in all competitions, Callejon performed a celebratory dance.

“They play great football but we played very maturely and very seriously,” he said. “Tactically, mentally, and in terms of suffering, we played a great match.”

After going behind, the visitors frustrations grew and they ended up with ten men close to full-time when left-wing-back Maximiliano Olivera received his marching orders for a second bookable offence.

Nonetheless, the 1-0 win puts the Partenopei into the last-four with a possible meeting with either AC Milan or Juventus, who play on Wednesday.

Napoli, who face Real Madrid in the Champions League knockout round, have not lost since falling to Juventus 2-1 on Oct. 29 in Serie A.
