Global FC deservedly beat Singapore’s Tampines Rovers 2-0 to go through to the second phase of Preliminary Stage qualifying for the AFC Champions League.
The Philippines champions started the better of the two sides with Tampines Rovers’ goalkeeper Izwan Mahbud called into action with saves from Misagh Bahadoran and Dennis Villanueva in the first half.
Their excellent play in the first period carried over into the second and they duly took the lead on 61 minutes when Ahamd Azzawi smashed the ball into the net following good play from his team-mates.

And the second came just 12 minutes later, this time from forward Bahadoran, whose shot was heading towards goal before it took a deflection off Tampines defender Daniel Bennet and found its way past Mahmud and into the net.
The drama wasn’t finished there, though, as Khairul Amri had a penalty saved by Global keeper Patrick Deyto after Dennis Villanueva had brought down Shakir Hamza, Deyto’s save making sure Global could see the rest of the game out with relative ease.
Victory for the side from the Philippines sets up a clash with Australia’s Brisbane Roar at Brisbane Stadium on January 31 in Preliminary Stage 2.
The Stags, meanwhile, now drop into Group G of the AFC Cup, where they will face Vietnam’s Ha Noi T&T, Malaysia’s Felda United and Philippines’ Ceres Negro.
