Ghana fullback Baba Rahman will miss the remainder of the Africa Cup Nations tournament in Gabon after injuring his knee in their 1-0 win over Uganda on Tuesday.
While the Black Stars would have been delighted to win their opening Afcon game, Rahman's withdrawal will be a big blow to their preparations for the rest of the tournament.
The initial diagnosis did not look good after the defender twisted his knee and needed to be stretchered off the field, before MRI scans later confirmed the worst.
"Rahman suffered a rupture of the meniscus and a particular tear of the anterior cruciate ligament with fluid collection in the knee," Ghana media officer Ibrahim Sannie said.
Rahman is on the books of Premier League leaders Chelsea, but is on a season-long loan at Schalke in Germany, which is where he will return for treatment.
"Initial diagnosis of Baba's injury shows a bruised meniscus. The S04 man is returning to Gelsenkirchen for further examination," the Bundesliga club posted to its official Twitter account.
